#1 The beeping of my alarm wakes me from an unpleasant sleep on the rocky ground prevalent in most mountain ranges. Checking the time, my watch tells me it is 4:30 a.m. Jumping out of my sleeping bag, I don’t think about wanting to get more sleep. Instead, I’m grateful the day has finally arrived where I will climb Long’s Peak. Hurriedly dressing for the hike, I reflect on how I got to this day.
#2 April 6th, 2004 was a day that changed my life forever. Waking up the morning after my godmother’s antique store opening, I walked downstairs to make my dad his coffee. My dad was feeling too ill the evening before and was not able to attend the store’s opening night. Since he had missed out on the great evening, I wanted to check in on my pops and fill him in, but as always, no one is allowed to wake him up before 10 a.m. without his cup of coffee in their hands. Once the coffee pot was filled to the brim, I stopped the machine and grabbed one of the Disney coffee mugs out of the cupboard. Excited to see my daddy, I walked over to his room, which was on the back porch next to the kitchen, carrying his cup of joe, when the next thing I remembered was my mother rushing down the stairs after hearing glass shattering all over the kitchen floor.
#3 “When is mommy coming home from the hospital?” I patiently inquired from my older cousin with whom I had been living for the past week.
“She should be coming home in a few days, but I will take you to see her today.”
As I excitedly ran upstairs to get ready, I had many thoughts running through my head.
“I wonder what it looks like.”
“Is it going to sleep a lot?”
“Is it going to cry?”
Let me clarify, when I say it, I am not referring to my mother, I’m talking about my newly born sibling.
#4 Do you remember the night before the big day and you just couldn’t seem to fall asleep? You laid in your bed thinking, I’ve made it, it’s finally over, or I’m really going to miss my friends. Do you remember the next morning waking up to see your mom or dad taking the gown out of the bag to get those last few wrinkles out? Or maybe you remember marching down the aisle and looking over to see your family waving and smiling because they were so happy. You might remember standing in line on the verge of tears waiting for your name to be called. Can you remember how many times people told you they were proud of you? I can, because my high school graduation was one of the most important days of my life, but getting that far, took a lot of hard work.
#5 Freedom—something so many people wish for. It was the summer of 2008 when I received my freedom—August 14th, 2008 to be exact. I sat in the driveway and watch my parents drive down the street and a feeling of accomplishment rushed over me. I was finally on my own; free to do as I chose. So why my cheeks were wet and why I was sniffling was confusing to me. I had wished for freedom forever and I was finally receiving it, yet deep down inside I longed for things to return to the way they were before I was free.
#6 Mute. I was completely mute. I couldn’t sing, scream, shout or anything. I was forced to communicate using short sentences on memo pad. I had never felt so quiet before. As much as I wanted to let loose with a cry, it was against the doctor’s orders. I just had my tonsils removed and making audible sounds was not such a good idea. In fact, there were several ways that this little surgery impacted my day-to-day life.
#7 There had been close calls in the past, but none like this. Almost every year the river pours over its banks, sometimes climbing higher than the year before. If not for the levees, the river would devour my little hometown of Oakville, Iowa every year. There had only been one year in the past that had threatened Oakville, and that was back in 1993. Yet, still no comparison to the flood of 2008.
